Where wedge anchors are used

They are the usual fixing for base plates on RCC roof slabs, concrete pedestals and ground-mount foundations, where heavy-duty pull-out strength matters. A wedge anchor needs solid concrete to expand against; for brick or other masonry, a rawl bolt is the better choice.

Ours are MS (mild steel), zinc coated, and come with a nut and washer.

Fitting a wedge anchor bolt

Drill a hole of the anchor's diameter through the base plate into the concrete, a little deeper than the anchor will go. Blow or brush the dust out, because dust weakens the grip. Tap the anchor in with the nut and washer on, then tighten the nut: the wedge expands and pulls the plate down tight.

Keep anchors well away from the edge of a slab or pedestal, where the concrete can crack.
